Man Hunt - The Original Outbreak Scenario

Hopefully we can all still remember the days gathering with friends and foes on the schoolyard during recess. They would come to a consensus on who would be 'it'. The method was random and ruthless. One of us in this circle of survivors would become the one. The one to hunt down and tag others and convert them to their team to chase down the remaining survivors.

The game would start and its all out chaos. Everyone would scramble and flee from the outbreak zone. The smart ones would run as far as possible and hide at the edges of the playground. The cocky ones would be hanging out closer to the infected and rely on their natural athleticism. And the kids who stood behind the kid who was 'It'... well the verdict is still out on what those kids were.

Everyone holds their position and watches the cocky kids play and dance around the lonely infected. All is fun and games until someone slips up. Then it happens. One of the fastest kids on the playground gets tagged. This is truly a SHTF (**** hit the fan) moment that all of us have experienced at least once.

Now the kids on the border of the playground watch in horror as the infected slowly collect up all the slower kids that have been flushed from their hiding spots. The horror continues as hordes of the infected chase down individuals. (Much like the opening chase across the field in 28 weeks later) Finally the last survivor is left fleeing for his life. Eventually they are caught and the next game begins.

Maybe this childhood game could be the origin of why the zombie genre is so popular. We can all relate to the survivors in our comics or movies. Surviving against the outnumbering hordes of individuals chasing you down trying to get you to join their team was the game. And someday it might be again. When that day comes, Ill be ready to play one more time.
