A prepper and an environmentalist walk into a bar...

We often get asked by those who haven't had much time to get to know us, "what if the zombie apocalypse doesn't end up happening? What if the world doesn't end?" My favourite response is, "Then we would have had all this fun for nothing." But, when I stop to reflect, the smart ass response really isn't sufficient.

Sure this life is fun. I am surrounded by passionate doers. I am constantly improving myself and trying new things. I suppose these things don't need to have an ends in mind, but for discussion sake let's find one.

On paper, we are preparing ourselves for potentialities in which we must be "self sufficient". I threw the literal quotes around self sufficient because, as we have discussed before, it takes a tribe to thrive. Nonetheless, we are building towards sustainability in case of a disastrous inevitability.

Wait, when I think about it, that's not true. We are building towards sustainability because it just makes more sense. Living in a way where we can foreseeably maintain our lifestyle without eventual collapse or with the hope of magically infinite resources is rational. Survivalist training isn't simply about making it through a disaster, it could actually be a great way of preventing one. Whether you like it or not, we are in the same camp as many environmentalists when it comes to our view of the natural world and how to treat resources.

It makes sense to respect and understand your surroundings and plan ahead for the seasons to come. Living a more sustainable lifestyle will mean we are better off during a zombie outbreak, climate upheaval or on Tuesday. So I guess if the world doesn't end, then we can probably say we had a little bit to do with that.
