Where Are the Zombie Video Games?

Why cant we just have a Zombie video game?

I know lots of you have played a zombie video game like Left for Dead, Dead Island, Dying Light or maybe even the new Dead Rising. Yes these are technically zombie games. However they are also monster games. The biggest challenge to your character is not the advertised zombie masses but rather a mutated monster. If anyone has played any of the Resident Evil games they know exactly what I'm talking about. One second you are living out your fantasy of battling hordes of zombies and the next thing you know the fantasy is shattered by a venom spitting, tentacle flailing, wall leaping mutant that is bullet proof everywhere except the flashing part of its body.

The biggest problem with zombie apocalypse games is that the zombies are no threat at all. Its the monsters that add a puzzle element to the game. These mini boss fights keep things interesting. But the authentic zombie hordes are faded into the background as you have to generally ignore them to deal with the monsters.

It can be difficult for the developers to create unique zombies that pose a threat to the gamer. But I'm not saying that we need to always have a 6'8 zombie that can only be hit from behind or an obese zombie that you need to run around until it falls over. I'm saying that giving the player the ability to slaughter hordes from level 1 may lead you to a problem in scaling up the difficulty with the players abilities; I mean not all of us could stumble across a machete in the zombie apocalypse and be The Butcher taking out 15 zombies at a time on day 1 (unless you've trained with us).

So please game developers give me a zombie survival game where I have to worry about fighting off zombies and only zombies (marauders would be welcome too).
